A Type 464 (Provisioning) Lancaster bomber of 617 Squadron, ED906/G AJ-J for Johnny, whose Barnes Wallis-designed Upkeep 'bouncing bomb' finally smashed the Mohne Dam on 17 May 1943. Release parameters: 232mph at 60ft as gauged by the offset spotlights, 450 yards from target. Codename for weapon released was "Goner". Pilot David Maltby, Flight engineer William Hatton, Navigator Vivian Nicholson, Wireless operator Antony Stone, Bomb aimer John Fort, Front gunner Victor Hill, Rear gunner Harold Simmonds. The crew returned from this operation but were lost that summer.

16 May 1943: the second flight of the first wave of specially modified Lancaster bombers from 617 squadron to cross the North Sea at extremely low level bound for the Ruhr dams in Germany in Operation Chastise was led by Squadron leader Melvin "Dinghy" Young in ED887/G AJ-A. On his right, F/L David Shannon in ED929/G AJ-L. On his left, F/L David Maltby in ED906/G AJ-J. Young and his crew would not return, crashing into the sea after being hit by flak, on their way home from successfully cracking the Mohne Dam.

The first wave of specially modified Type 464 (Provisioning) Lancaster bombers crosses the North Sea towards the Dutch coast at very low level on 16 May 1943 at the start of Operation Chastise - the Dambusters attack on the Ruhr dams. Wing Commander Guy Gibson leads with his crew of six in Lancaster ED932/G AJ-G. "And the moon dancing in those waves had become almost a hypnotising crystal," he wrote later. Gibson almost ditched the 30-ton, four-engined bomber trying to light a cigarette - eventually getting the flight engineer, John Pulford, to light it for him. On his right, John "Hoppy" Hopgood and crew in ED925/G AJ-M: "There he was, in his great Lancaster only a few feet from mine, flying perfectly steady, never varying position." On his left, level with Hoppy on the other side, was Harold "Micky" Martin and his crew in ED909/G AJ-P: "Now and again he would drop down even lower than I was, and I was a bit frightened in case he hit the drink. But apparently he knew what he was doing because he never came closer than 30ft to the water."
